Medications During Pregnancy
Nausea:
Emetrol (safe, over-the-counter product) - liquid taken by mouth per instructions on bottle. (contact your provider if this isn't working and you feel you need something stronger).
Indigestion:
-- Mylanta, Maalox, Tums (safe, over the counter product) - take as directed on bottle.
-- Riopan Plus (this tastes better than the liquids but is not as effective)
Headaches:
Plain Tylenol, Extra Strength Tylenol, Extra Strength Excedrin Without Aspirin (Rest in a dark quiet room putting damp rag over forehead - report to us if you don't respond)
Colds/Coughs & Sinus Problems:
-- Plain or Extra Strength Tylenol for aches and fever
-- Plain Robitussin or Chlo-Triminton for coughs
-- Throat lozenges (after 12 weeks, actifed or sudafed, before 12 weeks, we don't recommend antihistamines or nasal sprays. If you have a fever over 100 call your provider.
Constipation:
First, try adding 2 TBSP of unprocessed wheat bran or prune juice to your daily diet and increasing your fluid intake. Sprinkle the Wheat bran over your usual food (i.e. over cereal or salad, or stirred in a glass of juice). Unprocessed wheat bran is usually effective. It is available in grocery stores, packaged in bags, sold in the flour section. If bran doesn't relieve you, take Milk of Magnesia or Metamucil, PerDiem, Colace or Doulax. All are safe during pregnancy. Also, try to increase your exercise.
Diarrhea:
Plain Donnagel or Immodium AD (over the counter) and a diet of clear liquids for 24 hours. If it persists more than 2 days, call us.
Yeast Infection:
Monistat 7 or Femstat 3 over-the-counter. If they don't help call your provider.
